Canal Fulton on the hunt for missing 1980s time capsule

School Searching for Decades-Old Time Capsule

CANAL FULTON, Ohio (WJW) -- From the canal and the museum by the water, to the streets and the buildings that date back to before the Civil War. Canal Fulton is a town steeped in rich history.

That is, when they can find it.

The old elementary school on Market Street will soon be torn down and the location of a time capsule is a mystery.

"If anybody has any memory, I'm looking for an accurate memory. I did get an email somebody thought it was off one of the front corners of the school. That's a lot of digging. We need specifics," Canal Fulton City Manager Mark Cozy said.

This all started 30-some years ago when the new wing in the back was built. Students and teachers buried a time capsule to mark the occasion

But no one quite remembers when they did, where it's buried or what it might even look like.

"People have given the city an earful and the shovels have been flying," said former student Barb Shockey.

Some folks remember it being near the flag pole. Not there.

It's also not buried by the 1926 corner stone, under the big rocks in front or by trees

And, yes, they've used a metal detector.

So why go through the trouble to find it? The children in the community at the time wanted to preserve something to be a part of history. In a town that traces its roots back to 1814, being a part of that history is something to be cherished.

"I think it's important to the children who put that into the ground," Cozy said.

The wrecking ball is due by the end of the month so there is still time to look.
