Nothing to be proud of! Louisiana is the unhealthiest state in USA

Study Finds the Unhealthiest State in the Nation

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) -- Here's something we're definitely not proud of! According to a new study, Louisiana unseats Mississippi as the most unhealthy state in the nation.

News with a Twist Reporter Kenny Lopez explains why!

Its a shame! Louisiana is now the unhealthiest state in the country.

"I'm not surprised at all because the food is amazing here and the quantities are huge," Albert Malaty said.

According to a 2015 study done by the United Health Foundation -- Louisiana is the worst due to trends in obesity, smoking, diabetes, and physical inactivity. The other worst states for health are Mississippi, Arkansas, West Virginia, and Alabama. As for the healthiest states, Hawaii ranks as the healthiest state followed by Vermont, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and New Hampshire.

We headed to Franco's athletic club on Magazine street to talk with Body Pump instructor, Stephen Segari about what people can do to become healthier.

"Watch what you eat. Go for healthier food options. Get grilled instead of fried, no bun on the burgers, eat sweet potatoes instead of regular fries. Those are a few things you can do along with regular exercise," Segari said.

That's exactly what Albert Malaty did. He radically changed his diet and lost 95 pounds.

"I eat organic fruits and vegetables, along with lean proteins," he said.

And folks like Marie Oliver are fighting Louisiana's unhealthy stigma.

"I try to stay hydrated, eat as healthy as I can and try not to skip the gym," she said.

Franco's has a special for the new year. The initiation fee is only $99.
