Was Blackbeard a Gentleman?

Blackbeard the Gentleman?

Blackbeard is one of the most famous pirates of all time, but is it possible this bearded bohemian has been misunderstood for nearly three centuries?!

According to the Daily Mail some historical records were found which suggested Blackbeard's ferocious reputation could be all wrong.

The article goes on to call the pirate whose real name was Edward Thache or Teach – a caring family man, and respected war veteran who gave much of his fortune to support his younger siblings.

Allegedly official records from Jamaica even suggest he had a daughter who married a doctor on the islands.

BBC also reported Blackbeard was very intelligent and realised the power of image over brute force.

In fact most eye-witness accounts of him describe a man who honoured his word when dealing with hostages, and never resorted to aimless violence.

Other accounts describe him as one of the most violent crooks of all time.

So savage or softy?

The world may never know.
