Elizabeth II, daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I, married Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947.
The next year, they had a son, Charles, and in 1950 a daughter, Anne.
With the death of King George VI on Feb. 6, 1952, the throne passed to Elizabeth. She was coronated on June 2, 1953 in a spectacular ceremony.
Here, just a few months after her crowning, the 27-year-old queen plays with the prince and princess at Balmoral Castle, a royal estate in Scotland.
