Reports: Man shot and killed in lobby of Michigan police department

(Reuters) - A man was shot and killed in the lobby of police station in a Detroit suburb on Thursday morning after lunging at a security guard with a knife, local media reported.

The man refused to take his belongings out of his pocket, became upset and lunged at the guard with a knife in the lobby of the Dearborn Heights Police Department, the Fox and ABC television stations reported, citing Mayor Daniel Paletko.

Dearborn Heights is about 14 miles west of Detroit.

Paletko could not immediately be reached for comment. Dearborn Heights Sergeant Steve Popp would only confirm there had been a shooting in the lobby but declined to provide further details.

Popp said that as of 10 a.m., the building was closed and the scene was secured.
