From Lionsgate TV, Emmy nominee Jessica Sharzer (American Horror Story, The L Word) will pen the script, with Breslin taking on Jennifer Grey's iconic role as Baby. The Three-hour event will be produced by Allison Shearmur Productions (The Hunger Games) and Eleanor Bergstein, who penned the screenplay for the original movie. Grammy nominee Adam Anders and Peer (Glee) will tackle music for ABC's rendition. Anders and Cairo (Crazy Heart) will produce. Wayne Blair (The Sapphires) will direct. Tony winner Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton, Bring It On) will be responsible for choreography. Stephen Altman (GosfordPark) is set as producing designer.

The movie, co-starring Patrick Swayze and Jerry Orbach, was produced on a $6 million budget and has grossed more than $213 million worldwide since its release.

The film, which spawned a 2004 reboot (Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights), featured two multi-platinum selling soundtracks created by Jimmy Ienner that included hits "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," which won the Golden Globe and Academy Award for best original song and Grammy for best duet.

In 2011, Lionsgate announced plans to remake Dirty Dancing with Kenny Ortega (The Wiz) — the film's original choreographer, set to direct. That was shelved in 2012.

That ABC would dive into the TV movie musical genre comes as little surprise. NBC has found ratings gold with its live musicals The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and The Wiz, the latter of which also became a critical success. Fox, meanwhile, in January will debut Grease: Live and is prepping a tapped TV movie musical based on The Rocky Horror Picture Show with Laverne Cox set to star.

Breslin, repped by CAA, counts Fox's Scream Queens and feature Little Miss Sunshine among her credits.
