AOL.com #GivingTuesday Week 3 winner: Shelter Pet Project

Updated

Leading up to #GivingTuesday, the AOL team is giving readers a chance to vote for the organizations they want to see featured on the homepage.

Last week, thousands of readers voted between five charities and asked that 'Shelter Pet Project' be the AOL promoted charity of the week.

Shelter Pet Project joins Feeding America and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital on AOL.com for a final poll on November 30. The final organization with the most votes will be promoted again on AOL.com, this time on #GivingTuesday. We're excited to provide our support and help champion our nonprofit partners' messages!

Each year, 6 to 8 million dogs and cats will enter shelters and rescue groups, and only half will be adopted. Many people mistakenly think that shelter pets are damaged goods and that they did something wrong to end up in a shelter. The Shelter Pet Project, a collaborative effort with the Humane Society of the United States, Maddie's Fund® and the Ad Council, aims to dispel those myths and encourage prospective pet owners to make shelters and rescue groups their first choice and preferred way for acquiring companion animals.
