Maryland's Washington College closed indefinitely over threat

Nov 17 (Reuters) - Maryland's Washington College closed indefinitely on Tuesday as state and federal authorities searched for an allegedly armed student facing an arrest warrant, the school said.

The college in Chestertown was closed until further notice "in the interest of caution and due to new information received from law enforcement," it said in a statement.

The school was first closed on Monday after officials learned that sophomore student Jacob Marberger returned to his home in Pennsylvania to retrieve a gun. It had planned to reopen on Tuesday.

The college said Marberger was facing an arrest warrant. Police and school officials did not give details about the warrant other than that it stemmed from an incident on campus.

Washington College said it had no direct threats against the campus or students and staff. It said on Monday that Marberger was believed still to be in Pennsylvania.

About 1,450 undergraduate students attend the school about 70 miles northeast of Washington.
