Animal-loving man tragically mauled to death by dog he adopted hours earlier

A Tennessee man tragically met his demise by a dog he planned on welcoming in to his new home.

Anthony Riggs had always loved animals. The 57-year-old had just adopted a stray Rottweiler from the county pound hours before it mauled him to death, according to the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

According to a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office, Rigg's wife, Kathy came home with a coworker only to find her husband's unresponsive body on the ground.

Kathy called 911 about a dog attack, who dispatched Madison County Sheriff's deputies to the home. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

Both Kathy and her coworker, Teresa Sanchez, were reportedly bitten by the dog as well. The Rottwieler was shot by deputies after it ran out of the house.

Sanchez told The Jackson Sun that the dog's behavior was extremely unusual.

The 5-year-old dog was a stray that had been picked up five days before adoption, according to the director of the Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department, Kim Tedford. The director added that the Rottwieler showed no signs of aggressive behavior while being held at Rabies Control.

The dog will be autopsied.
