Princess Diana's Ex-Lover Allegedly Caught Selling Love Letters

James Hewitt, the infamous old flame of Princess Diana, has reportedly been caught attempting to sell intimate letters between the princess and himself.

Their long and complicated relationship began in 1986, when the Princess of Wales hired the ex-cavalry officer to teach her how to ride horses, a lifelong fear she was ready to overcome.

The letters span throughout their illustrious five-year affair and friendship, including affectionate and expressive letters from Princess Di, as well as adorable notes from the now fully grown Prince William.

In a 2003 interview with Larry King, Hewitt publicly announced that he would sell his letters from the Princess for over $15 million. He has since flip-flopped in the pursuit of this sale. When asked about his involvement in the most recent scandal, he originally denied claims that he was attempting to sell the letters, later telling press that he had 'nothing to say' in response to the scandal.

Here are some stunning photos of the beloved princess throughout the years (story continues below):

Despite Hewitt's denial of involvement with the scandal, LA-based memorabilia dealer Gary Zimet has confirmed that he has been in negotiations to handle the sale of the letters. Based on emails signed by Hewitt, Zimet was assigned the 'sole and exclusive agent' of the sale.

Despite the purported attempted discretion of the deal, not only has information within the letters leaked, but it has also gone viral.

Zimet also revealed that they received an offer for over $150,000 for the letters, but that Hewitt backed out.

"He changed his mind," says Zimet. "Perhaps the offer wasn't enough."

Although it is unclear whether Hewitt's cold feet are due to monetary or moral reasons, this is not the first time that he has been accused of defaming his relationship with The People's Princess for the sake of hard cash.

Since the scandal has broken, Hewitt has released a statement claiming that he will keep his letters from the beloved Princess "until [he dies]."

When recently asked if he regrets his relationship with the Princess of Wales, Hewitt has responded, "I regret everything."
