NASA May Have Spotted Ice Volcanoes On Pluto

As part of the data recently received by NASA from New Horizons are images showing two mountains on Pluto that look a lot like ice volcanoes.

The mission's team is not ready to confirm whether they are or not, but do describe the elevations having apparent holes on their tops.

While volcanoes as we know them here on Earth spit out fiery substances, should there be any volatile mountains on Pluto, they are apt to eject soft-frozen water containing gasses.

Pluto's largest moon Charon

This July 13, 2015, image of Pluto and Charon is presented in false colors to make differences in surface material and features easy to see. It was obtained by the Ralph instrument on NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, using three filters to obtain color information, which is exaggerated in the image.  These are not the actual colors of Pluto and Charon, and the apparent distance between the two bodies has been reduced for this side-by-side view.

This map of Pluto, made from images taken by the LORRI instrument aboard New Horizons, shows a wide array of bright and dark markings of varying sizes and shapes. The elongated dark area informally known as “the whale,” along the equator on the left side of the map, is one of the darkest regions visible to New Horizons. It measures some 1,860 miles (3,000 kilometers) in length. Continuing to the right, along the equator, we see the four mysterious dark spots that have so intrigued the world, each of which is hundreds of miles across. This image of Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, was taken by the Ralph color imager aboard NASA's New Horizons spacecraft on April 9 and downlinked to Earth the following day. It is the first color image ever made of the Pluto system by a spacecraft on approach. The image is a preliminary reconstruction, which will be refined later by the New Horizons science team. Clearly visible are both Pluto and the Texas-sized Charon. The image was made from a distance of about 71 million miles (115 million kilometers)-roughly the distance from the Sun to Venus. At this distance, neither Pluto nor Charon is well resolved by the color imager, but their distinctly different appearances can be seen. As New Horizons approaches its flyby of Pluto on July 14, it will deliver color images that eventually show surface features as small as a few miles across.

Further study is needed to say with certainty if the mountains perform such tricks.

Evidence either way may be forthcoming, as about 80% of the knowledge New Horizons is holding has yet to be transmitted.

Thus far scientists do know the two features are located in the dwarf planet's south polar region and are quite large.

One extends upwards between 2 and 3 miles while the other is estimated to be about 3.7 miles high.

Ice volcanoes are known to exist elsewhere in the solar system, including on Neptune's moon Triton.
