Muslim Man Says He Was Fired for Beard

A Muslim man has filed suit against Bed Bath & Beyond, saying he was fired because of his beard.

The New York Daily News reports Jose Alcantara was subjected to torment from his co-workers while growing out his facial hair in adherence to the Muslim faith.

According to the report, co-workers repeatedly called him a "terrorist." Alcantara eventually lost his job for missing work after his supervisor tampered with his vacation days, according to the lawsuit.
Alcantara became Muslim while watching his mother-in-law suffer from cancer. The lawsuit points to a specific incident where an HR representative approached Alcantara and asked "What's going on with the beard."

In a statement to the New York Daily News, Bed Bath & Beyond said:

"Bed Bath & Beyond strictly prohibits any form of harassment or unlawful discrimination. We disagree with the characterization of the separation that was provided. We will respond to this matter in the appropriate forum, should any further legal action be taken."

The suit has been filed in Manhattan Supreme Court. The date of the trail has not been set.
