A group of kind-hearted Michigan high school students have served as pallbearers for homeless veterans without families.

Six students from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy carried the caskets of three veterans at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly last week, the school said in a statement.

"The men we honored... put their lives on the line for our country and now they deserve our dignity and service in return," one of the students, senior-year student Leonard Froehlich, said.

"There is no better way to pay our respects than by being pallbearers. We honor these service members by being with them in their last moments on earth, and that in itself is a privilege."

The school is partnering with local funeral homes to ensure that the former soldiers are appropriately honored. More than 50 students from the school have signed up to help.

The all-boys Catholic school explained in a statement that the students provided "a much needed service for veterans without family members present at death."

School President Karl J. Kiser, S.J. added: "Preserving the dignity of the human soul is important to all human beings, regardless of a person's situation at death."

After the school posted photographs of the service to Facebook, the community applauded the students' incredible gesture.

"As a veteran, I want to say thank you for honoring our fallen warriors, my brothers and sisters," one man wrote. "As a person, I want to say thank you for being people and leading by example."
