But one woman is not 100% happy with the "save the boobies" message. 36-year-old Jenn Alter is currently in remission from breast cancer, and wants the world to see what the disease actually looks like.
Instead of cute pink t-shirts, rubber bracelets with pink ribbons, and braless social media campaigns, Alter wants to expose people to the real hurt and pain that comes with the cancer. Alter posted the following pictures on her Tumblr page, along with the following message.
"This was during my 35 day radiation treatment back in 2013. Breast cancer isn't sexy. It's not about saving the boobies. It's not about no bra day, which is really just an excuse for women to post sexy pics of their nipples pressing through their clothes. It's scars, nausea, pain, bald heads, burnt skin, and broken hearts.
If this doesn't make you "aware" then I don't know what will.
Does it make you uncomfortable? It should."
Warning, these graphic photos and language could be disturbing to some viewers:
Thankfully, Alter is now in remission. As reported by The Huffington Post, "she wanted to show people that breast cancer is about more than cute T-shirts and sexy phrases."
