Talk about a good sports night.

We expected Tuesday to provide a great viewing session for sports fans throughout the country, with the World Series opening around the same time as the NBA's season-opening double-header was tipping off. But nobody could've expected the theatrics we all witnessed.

In Game 1 of baseball's Fall Classic, Matt Harvey of the Mets squared off against Kansas City's Edinson Volquez -- and the ridiculousness began early.

It took all of one pitch in the bottom of the first for the Royals to get on the board in what may have been the wildest start to an inning in World Series history. Alcides Escobar drilled one to the gap in left-center field, between Michael Conforto and Yoenis Cespedes -- only for miscommunication to ensue and Cespedes to kick the ball into an unmanned corner of the outfield, resulting in an inside-the-park home run to get things going in the World Series.

The Mets did get back on the board, though, and eventually tied it with a single, sac fly and Curtis Granderson home run. But what gave New York the lead was a play that could've lived forever in Royals infamy, if not for what later transpired.

Wilmer Flores hit a shot to Eric Hosmer at first base, who booted it, allowing Juan Lagares to score with two outs. The Mets took the field for the bottom of the ninth with a one-run lead, setting up a save situation for Jeurys Familia, who hadn't blown a save since July 30 -- the day before New York acquired Yoenis Cespedes.

So, naturally, the Royals tied it.

Alec Gordon ripped a shot over the centerfield wall -- and it was the last bit off scoring fans would see for hours.

It took five more innings, but in the 14th, with Bartolo Colon on the mound, Kansas City loaded the bases with nobody out -- setting up Hosmer for a chance to redeem himself. Which is exactly what he did.

A sac fly to right field got the Royals a run and a Game 1 victory on a night that had tragedy written all over it. The teams square off again Wednesday night, as Jacob deGrom takes on Johnny Cueto.

When Stephen Curry is on -- which is more often than not -- things get downright scary for opponents. And that's exactly what happened during last night's season-opener. Curry recorded 24 points in the first quarter and totaled 40 before the fourth quarter -- which he didn't even participate in. He also added seven assists and six boards, while Anthony Davis struggled, making just four of 20 shots in an easy Golden State win.

CHI 97, CLE 95
It wasn't without a Derrick Rose injury scare, but the Bulls pulled off a very impressive victory in Fred Hoiberg's pro coaching debut over LeBron James and the Cavaliers. LeBron and Love combined for 43 points and 18 boards, but five Bulls scored in double-figures. In what could be a preview of the Eastern Conference Finals later in 2016, the Cavs learned that they'll have some serious competition come playoff time.

DET 106, ATL 94
In the non-nationally televised undercard of the night, Detroit put on a very impressive showing against last year's No. 1 seed in the East. Atlanta uncharacteristically struggled from deep, shooting less than 30 percent, while Detroit made more than 41 percent of their treys. All five Detroit starters scored at least 15 points while Andre Drummond also grabbed 19 rebounds. The Hawks weren't able to chop down a 14-point deficit they faced entering the final period. and the Pistons began their season with an encouraging W.
