A World Health Organization study reveals that bacon, ham and sausages "rank alongside cigarettes as a major cause of cancer."

Cured and processed meats are now in the same category as asbestos, alcohol, arsenic and tobacco in terms of cancer causers.

The study also places red meat in group 2A, as "probably carcinogenic to humans." Consuming red meat is also linked to pancreatic and prostate cancer, according to the study.

You could try having fish for your dinner rather than sausages, or choosing to have a bean salad for lunch over a BLT." type="quote" author="Professor Tim Key" authordesc="University of Oxford" isquoteoftheday="false"%

However, not everyone is convinced of the study's validity.

According to Betsy Booren, NAMI Vice President of Scientific Affairs, "It was clear sitting in the IARC meeting that many of the panelists were aiming for a specific result despite old, weak, inconsistent, self-reported intake data. They tortured the data to ensure a specific outcome."
