'Ghostbusters' star Kristen Wiig on backlash over all-female cast: 'Really bummed me out'

Sigourney Weaver Joins All-Female 'Ghostbusters' Reboot

Kristen Wiig didn't expect that the Ghostbusters reboot would catch any flak over its all-female cast.

The actress was asked by the Los Angeles Times to weigh in on reaction to the reboot, particularly to the fact that some fans complained about the gender switch. Wiig told the Times that she has never been involved in a project that garnered so much attention and controversy while it was being shot.

"And the fact there was so much controversy because we were women was surprising to me," Wiig said. "Some people said some really not nice things about the fact that there were women."

"It didn't make me mad, it just really bummed me out," the actress continued. "We're really honoring those movies."

Director Paul Feig's Ghostbusters also stars Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth. It hits theaters on July 22, 2016.
