Daniel Craig to star in Off Broadway 'Othello' with David Oyelowo

Daniel Craig will go from Bond to Iago next fall when he stars opposite David Oyelowo in an Off Broadway production of "Othello," to be directed by Tony winner Sam Gold.

Craig, who's excited to be moving on from Bond after the upcoming release of "Spectre," was last on stage in New York in the 2013 Broadway revival of "Betrayal." Before that he appeared in the 2009 Broadway production of "A Steady Rain" with Hugh Jackman. Both shows were box office smashes.

In "Othello" he'll play the devious Iago opposite Oyelowo, the "Selma" star who's appeared onstage in London in productions including "The Suppliants" and "Henry VI" (in the title role). Director Gold recently won a Tony for his direction of "Fun Home," which was the awards-season champ last spring. His production of Pulitzer winner "The Flick" is currently running Off Broadway.

"Othello" will play at New York Theater Workshop in fall 2016, with exact dates still to be determined. The Workshop has made a habit of hosting high-profile productions in recent years, including early stagings of Broadway successes such as "Once" and "Peter and the Starcatcher." Later this season the Workshop will present the world premiere of "Lazarus," the new David Bowie-Enda Walsh musical that stars Michael C. Hall and Cristin Milioti.
