CHICAGO (WGN TV) --A man on his way to work spotted a raging fire inside a historic home in Chicago Heights, and risked his life to rescue three people.
Fire consumed the Miller family home this morning on the 300 block of West 16th Street. The stunned family woke up to a wall of searing heat and smoke.
Tyree Miller, Jr was inside the home at the time. Tyree Miller, Sr, was apparently unconscious and had no way out. And his girlfriend Chong Lee Barnes suffered serious burns.
Charles Gluckleder was on his way to work and jumped out of his car to help.
Witnesses say he ran inside the burning wood frame home, directly into the heat and smoke and felt his way around to locate the victims one by one. Gluckleder lead them to, and even called them down the stairs to the front door where others help carry the victims to safety.
Chicago Heights firefighters and paramedics arrived to lend aid and put out the ferocious blaze rushing Miller Sr and his girlfriend to a local hospital. The 88-year-old Miller was quickly airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center burn unit. The Army veteran and retired pipefitter is fighting for his life and remains in the hospital.
Tyree Miller, Jr says no one would have survived if not for the courage of Gluckleder.
