Puerto Rico is making major steps forward for students across the board. According to Pink News, Puerto Rico's Education Minister, Rafael Roman, has confirmed changes to the school uniform code that allows boys to wear skirts and girls to wear slacks, if they choose.

This is especially pertinent, as the Puerto Rico Department of Education requires all students to wear school uniforms, with the exception of medical instances.

According to the Associated Press, students regardless of gender can choose to wear either a skirt or pants to school, without risk of punishment.

Critics of the new uniform policy accuse officials of stripping the parents of their power.

The Associated Press reports that the new regulation is meant not only to be more inclusive of gay, lesbian and transgender students, but also students across genders and sexualities.

This isn't only beneficial to boys who feel more comfortable in skirts, but also for girls who feel more comfortable in pants. The main goal of this policy seems to be the comfort of the students, whatever their preference of clothing may be.
