Tori Kelly follows in Britney Spears' footsteps in new 'Joy of Pepsi' spot

Updated

A lot went down on "Empire" Wednesday night after patriarch Lucious was released on bail, but something even more major happened on the commercial break.

"Should've Been Us" singer Tori Kelly, 22, became the first singer to perform Pepsi's iconic "Joy of Pepsi' jingle since Britney Spears 16 years ago in the debut of Pepsi's newest campaign with the breakout star.

"It's pretty surreal," Kelly told Billboard. "I remember the Britney Spears [spot], who I didn't realize was the last artist to sing this particular jingle for Pepsi -- that was 15 years ago. Just trying to be the follow-up for that is a pretty big deal and a huge honor. Remembering all the artists who have been a part of Pepsi -- it's really cool to be kind of like the next one."

Joe Prytka, who was the original director of the famous campaign 30 years ago, returned to the Pepsi set for the new spot, which also featured Jeff Gordon and Kyrie Irving.
