Tips for styling a maxi shirt

By: Lana Jayne

If you're confused by this season's maxi shirt trend—you know, the knee-length tops you've been seeing everywhere—you're not alone. The idea is interesting, but it's difficult to envision and execute.

Here are a few styling rules I stick to:

1. Substantial Slits: Layer maxi shirts over jeans (skinny, flare, whatever) only if the side slits are substantial and come up to the waist of your jeans. That way, you won't be overwhelmed by your look, and it will be airier and more flattering.

2. Unbuttoning: Fully unbuttoning, when possible, makes styling this silhouette easier. When unbuttoned, maxi shirts became a true layering piece you can mindlessly throw on. Layer unbuttoned maxi shirts over a tank with a faux fur vest on top, under an anorak jacket, etc. almost how you'd wear a flannel.

3. Layered Over Leggings: Leggings make it easier to wear maxi shirts that don't have buttons or that you want to wear fully buttoned up. Since leggings are sleeker and less bulky, they balance out the sometimes heavy maxi shirt look.

For today's post, I stuck with rule #3 and paired an ASOS maxi shirt with my favorite American Apparel matte lamé leggings. The insane lucite Jeffrey Campbell ankle boots—spotlighted previously here—inspired my look.
