Mom and newly adopted son die after tragic medical accident; toddler rescued days later
Police found the bodies of a mom and her infant son in her Hollywood apartment. It is believed the two had been deceased for days, according to KTLA. Officers were able to rescue the mother's other son, who was alive and severely dehydrated.
Los Angeles police were called to the Hollywood apartment around 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5 after a worried neighbor called 911.
Upon breaking into the apartment, first responders found the bodies of a woman in her mid-40s and a 1-year-old boy inside, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.
Although police would not release the name of the mother, friends told KTLA her name was Erika Tomassian. According to a neighbor, she had recently become a mother when she adopted the two brothers, Michael and Nathan.
LAPD Lt. John Jenal said that the woman was found in a seated position on the floor. He said the mom most likely collapsed while feeding her 1-year-old son, Michael. The boy, who was seated nearby, died after choking on some food.
Officials estimate that the mother and son had been dead for at least two days before being discovered.
Police say that Tomassian had been recovering from a bout of bronchitis, which may have caused her death.
Jenal said the neighbor knew about her illness and contacted 911 when he was unable to get in touch with the mother, but could hear the toddler crying from inside.
Foul play is not suspected.
