Cat Swallows Fish Hook, Vets Find Surprising Way to Help

SAN DIEGO (KSWB) -- A kitten feasted on some fresh fish – so fresh that it was still attached to the fish hook. Instead of performing surgery to remove the hook, a San Diego veterinarian took a different approach.

An Encanto resident brought the 4-month-old cat, who had literally "taken the bait," to the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services in Bonita on September 12 asking for help. An x-ray found the hook in the kitten's stomach.

Rather than perform surgery to extract the hook, the cat was x-rayed every day to ensure that the hook was moving through the kitten's body.

"Sure enough, on the 15th, the x-rays showed that the fish hook had passed," Animal Services posted online.

The kitten, named "Catfish," is currently available for adoption at our animal care facility in Bonita.

"The kitten purrs constantly and has a voracious appetite," Animal Services' medical staff said.
