Newborn baby found dumped in cardboard box marked 'SOLD'
A newborn baby girl, thought to be between 2 and 4 weeks old, was found abandoned on Monday in a cardboard box with a "sold" sticker on the side. A passer-by discovered the baby when he heard crying outside a house at 9 AM and saw the baby wrapped in a blue blanket inside the Tommee Tippee box in Corby, Northamptonshire. She was wearing only a nappy. Police said:
Nearby residents said that the box was initially dismissed as garbage out for collection. They do not know who the mother might be and were shocked to find out that a baby was inside the box. Resident Janet Barr, 50, said:
"I saw police in the road knocking on doors and heard from a friend that a little baby had been found. I was very upset but thank God the little one sounds like she will be okay. My friend said she overheard a PCSO say that several people walked past the box before anyone realized what was inside. The recycling bins are collected around here on a Wednesday so it's perfectly possible someone thought it was a bit of rubbish and left it out for the bin men. It doesn't bear thinking about what could have happened to the little baby. It's a miracle someone heard her crying and had the presence of mind to investigate. Everyone here is worried about the mother, whoever she might be. She must be in a terrible state to give up her baby. It's an awful thing to happen."
Northamptonshire Police released a picture of the box the baby was found in. They do not believe that there is any significance in where the baby was abandoned.
