NASA to Make Mystery Announcement About Mars on Monday

NASA has set the Internet abuzz after announcing that it is unveiling a "major science finding from the agency's ongoing exploration of Mars."

The space agency is scheduled to discuss the details of the discovery on Monday at 11:30 a.m. EDT -- but speculation is already running rampant ahead of the big reveal.

Many space experts believe that the finding could be related to the discovery of flowing water on the planet's surface after noticing that some of the participants in the news conference are authors on a paper on the same topic scheduled to be delivered this week.

Researchers already know that frozen water exists on Mars in the form of ice caps, but the discovery of liquid flowing water would have much more significant meaning.

"If they do confirm this is water that's seasonally flowing ... that would be an amazing discovery with dramatic implications," Chris Carberry, executive director of Explore Mars, explained to the Boston Herald.

Scientific theory suggests that liquid water is a key factor in creating life -- which would mean Mars would be a more hospitable environment to alien life. The discovery -- if confirmed -- could also increase the feasibility of a human mission to Mars, since the liquid water could potentially be repurposed to sustain astronaut life.

"It implies that there is some sort of heat source keeping the water liquefied and here on Earth, whenever you have heat and water, 100 percent of the time you have life," Carberry added. "We have no idea if that holds true on Mars, we don't know if there is life on Mars or if there ever has been — but it would certainly be another piece of evidence."
