Democracy is a highly valued aspect of freedom and government, so September 15 is dedicated to observing the International Day of Democracy.

In an effort to celebrate the International Day of Democracy, the United Nations implements activities that support the government's effort to promote and consolidate democracy.

The day was created at the UN General Assembly in 2007 as a stride towards encouraging governments to strengthen national programs that are devoted to the promotion and consolidation of democracy.

Ultimately, today serves as a reminder to governments everywhere that "the hallmark of successful and stable democracies is the presence of a strong and freely operating civil society."
