Are you a Desigual girl?

By: Why Did?

On Thursday afternoon, I braved the torrential downpour to attend my first show of the week at one of the newest New York Fashion Week locations, Skylight at Moynihan Station (at 33rd Street and 8th Avenue). While the location is more convenient than its predecessor at Lincoln Center for us downtown dwellers, the rain didn't do much to ease the commute. As this was my first time in the space, I was interested to see what was in store. I rushed through security after struggling with unlocking a wet iPhone with soggy fingers to present my seating assignment. Upon entering, I found the main thoroughfare to be underwhelming and even a bit unglamorous, save for the E! studios. The space for the show, however, was quite charming with antique scaffolding perfect for placement of lights to highlight the runway. I was running late, so I had to scout for an open seat before the plastic was peeled from the runway and the lights went down...That means I was REALLY late as most shows start approximately 15-20 minutes behind schedule

Desigual is always a great show to attend because it is one of the few shows during the very hectic week (and a half) that doesn't take itself too seriously. Always colorful, lots of smiles, and a head-bopping-worthy soundtrack to accompany it. This year was no exception, though I found the entire collection to be much more wearable than seasons past. Perhaps it was the very specific nod to the 90's- music included Blur and the Breeders, beauty incorporated cornrows and headscarves. The Desigual girl is cool and confident, friendly and carefree. The Barcelona-based design house favors ease over effort and that was clearly illustrated with breezy silhouettes, casual layering, and and hair and makeup that felt achievable by mere mortals, not just supermodels. Watching this show had me reaching for my Expedia app to book the next flight to Spain.

It was a packed house and most notably in the front row were Iris Apfel and Nigel Barker. Another fun element to the show was models carrying selfie sticks, which only seemed appropriate as it was almost hard to see the runway with everyone's arms up in order to capture images for SnapChat, Instagram, and Periscope. The cell service inside the venue was spotty and I'd like to think that had something to do with organizers wanting spectators to live in the moment, but if it isn't on Instagram, did it really happen?

Desigual's Spring '16 collection is exactly what the jet setting, island hopping woman is looking to pack in her carry-on.
