8-year-old dies a week after getting hit by school bus while tying shoe

On Friday September 4, 8-year-old James Rice was hit by a school bus and rushed to the hospital. A week later on September 11, the second-grader died.

Rice was hit by the Jackson, Mississippi school bus on Pocahontas Avenue Friday afternoon. He had just gotten off the bus and was on his way into the building when he stopped in front of the bus to tie his shoe.

Rice's aunt, Wanda Gant, said that Rice died at 9:15 AM Friday morning at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Gant said:

"We would like to thank everyone for the prayers and support for James. We're devastated by his loss and we ask for everyone to continue to pray for our family and to please respect our privacy as we grieve."




Jackson Public Schools' Campus Enforcement Division and the Jackson Police Department are investigating the accident.
