This Newly Discovered Crustacean Has Been Named After Elton John

Elton John wore such comically large shoes in one movie that he inspired at least one scientist to name an animal after him.

A recent study describes the newly discovered species of crustacean called Leucothoe eltoni after the famous entertainer.

The lead author explains, "I named the species in honor of Sir Elton John because I have listened to his music in my lab during my entire scientific career. So when this unusual crustacean with a greatly enlarged appendage appeared under my microscope after a day of collecting, an image of the shoes Elton John wore as the Pinball Wizard came to mind."

The crustacean, which is almost translucent, has a relatively proportional body except for two large front claws.

While it typically lives in the waters off Indonesia and the Philippines, the creature has also been found around Hawaii where it is considered a non-native invasive species.

The new species tends to live inside other organisms, as it was when found.
