An eerie scene under the sea. These are the oddly intact remains of a tragic shipwreck in the Red Sea.

Hundreds of passengers were making their annual pilgrimage to Mecca in 1991 when high winds pushed the ship, called the "Salem Express," into a coral reef between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The impact ripped a hole in the ship's hull. It took on water and sank.

Nearly 500 people died.

Take a look at shipwrecks throughout the world:

A British diver investigating the wreck nearly 100 feet below the surface found unpacked suitcases, cars, bicycles and, sadly, even lifeboats, littering the sea floor.

The pictures are a grim reminder of the lives lost not so very long ago.
