New York, N.Y. (WPIX) -- In recent presidential polls, a fairly unknown Independent candidate is gaining on Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

His name? Deez Nuts.

But in fact, Deez Nuts does not exist. 15-year-old Brady Olsen does though, and according to the Daily Beast, he chose to run as Deez Nuts just to see if he could.

The candidate from Wallingford, Iowa registered himself recently and has been gaining traction in several states.

According to Public Policy Polling, Deez Nuts is now polling at 9% in North Carolina.

Although Brady registered correctly with the Federal Election Committee, he was discovered when a local reporter tried to find him at the address listed on his registration and it was found that nobody named Deez Nuts was living there.

"It started because somebody emailed us under the name Deez Nuts," says Jim Williams, an issue polling specialist at Public Policy Polling. "He said, 'I'm Deez Nuts. I'm running. Here's my filing statement. Would you poll me?'"

"Anybody can fill out a Form 2," says FEC Deputy Press Officer Christian Hilland. "We do vetting, but it's more about did they fill out the information correctly? Did they review the fields? It doesn't speak to the authenticity of the individual who filed the claim."

And in Brady's defense, he filled out the form correctly.

All of the officially announced major candidates for 2016:

Nuts joins President Emperor Caesar, Buddy the Cat, Buddy the Elf, Jack Sparrow, James "Titus the Great" Law, Princess Oawlawolwaol, and Donald Trump in the 2016 race for the presidency.

Public Policy Polling surveyed 957 voters from August 12th to 16th, including 477 Democratic primary voters and 406 Republican primary voters. You can read the entire poll here.
