U.N. Celebrates World Humanitarian Day

Twelve years ago today, the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq was bombed. Because of this, August 19, 2003 will be remembered as the day 22 UN workers lost their lives.

To honor all those United Nations and aid workers around the world killed while trying to make the world a better place, and for all those who continue to risk their lives to help others, August 19 is celebrated as World Humanitarian Day.

Not only is this day to remember, it is also to inspire. The UN urges the public to join any of the world's humanitarian organizations to become "an active messenger of humanity."
