A woman has proposed to her girlfriend under water after secretly learning how to scuba dive.

Markie Miller became certified so that she could surprise her long-term girlfriend Sarah – a marine biologist and experienced diver – and pop the question while they were underwater.

"I told you I'd go to the bottom of the ocean for your love," read one sign, followed by another: "But right now I'm only certified to 60 feet."

She then added: "Will you marry me?"

Sarah signaled yes and the couple hugged.

After emerging from the ocean, Markie got down on one knee and presented her girlfriend with an engagement ring.

Sarah told Buzzfeed: "I was so blown away by how Markie was even underwater and how my brother and some of my best friends were also witnessing this! It was an amazing surprise.

"I am still as surprised that she can dive as I am that I am engaged!"

The Los Angeles couple, who have been together for six years, are hoping to marry next year.
