Jay Leno hasn't delivered a "Tonight Show" monologue in more than a year, but he evidently has the material for one.

Appearing at the Television Critics Association summer press tour Thursday to promote his new CNBC series "Jay Leno's Garage," the comic was asked if he had any jokes about Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. He responded in the affirmative.

"It's interesting watching this whole thing unfold," Leno said. "He and Jeb Bush are the frontrunners. It's kind of like watching the race between the tortoise and the bad hair."

"He then moved on to discuss Trump's diss of Sen. John McCain, whom the Donald refused to acknowledge as a hero after having been captured and held as a prisoner during the Vietnam War.

"What else can I say?" Leno said. "About McCain not being a hero, people don't realize, without McCain the North would have lost the Civil War."

He went on to say that Trump "has his head up his ass."
