On August 12, World Elephant Day aims to bring people together in an effort to help conserve and protect elephants from the threats that they face.

Elephants are the largest living land mammals, and can weigh anywhere from 6,000-15,000 lbs. Poaching has proven to be the biggest problem that the species is currently up against, but recent initiatives are generating hope for the end of poaching.

In an effort to show their love for elephants, zoos around the world are taking part in the celebration of World Elephant Day. The Los Angeles Zoo, for example, celebrated this past weekend with educational activities and entertainment on location.

Additionally, projects like 96 Elephants are aiming to protect and celebrate the amazing species.

At the start of the 20th century, there were about a few million African elephants and about 100,000 Asian elephants. There are less than 750,000 elephants in the world today -- both wild and captive -- and 96 elephants are killed per day in Africa, but by learning more about the species and donating to conservation organizations, people can start to make a difference.
