While smart people know that our bodies are merely cumbersome vessels that house our thoughts, if you're flying Uzbekistan Airways anytime soon, your body and its weight might actually hold some importance. In an announcement posted late last week, Uzbekistan Airways added itself to a short list of airlines that will weigh you — yes, you — with your luggage pre-flight. Goody.
The press release begins with a bang:
Dear passengers!
Uh-oh. That can't be good. It continues:
After passing check-in on flight and prior to boarding into the aircraft, we will suggest you to pass the procedure of weighing with the special weighing machine placed in the departure gate zone.
The weighing record will only contain the corresponding passenger category (i.e. male/ female/ children). As for the rest, the full confidentiality of results is guaranteed.
While Uzbekistan Airways' weigh-in is not nearly as ruthless as Samoa Air's "pay-by-weight" system, there are no details on what would happen, say, if you were two late-night taco runs too heavy to board the plane. All airlines must follow Air Transportation Association regulations for weight onboard their aircraft, but it's presumed that passengers aren't to be scrutinized themselves. Can we live?
