American Idolseason 4 finalist Constantine Maroulis was arrested and released Wednesday morning (Aug. 12) on a domestic violence charge, according to TMZ.

The 39-year-old Broadway star's representative told the site that he was defending himself after he told Angel Reed -- the mother of his 4-year old daughter -- that he was leaving her. Wyckoff, N.J., police responded after Reed called 911 alleging she was thrown to the ground and kicked in the groin.

Through his representative, Maroulis denied the allegations and said the star did not kick Reed. His rep added that there is evidence to prove his innocence and that the singer has a thigh injury from when she threw something at him.

Maroulis finished in sixth place on American Idol in 2005. He went on to star on Broadway in Rock of Ages and Jekyll and Hyde.

Billboard's requests for further comment were unanswered at press time.
