As if the New York Jets needed more drama, starting quarterback Geno Smith will miss the next 6-10 weeks with what head coach Todd Bowles called "a busted jaw."

The injury occurred off the field and in the locker room, Bowles said. Twenty-four-year-old linebacker IK Enemkpali "sucker-punched" Smith in the face, leaving him with a broken jaw. Enemkpali has been released from the team.

Drama has surrounded Smith and the Jets since their marriage began before the 2013 season. His poor showing last year already had some fans pulling for newly signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to win the starting job over him in the preseason. Smith was reportedly having an impressive camp, throwing his first two interceptions just Monday.

Last month, Smith was voted as the NFL's worst starting quarterback for the second straight year, according to anonymous NFL insiders and coaches.

Fitzpatrick has started 89 career games, including 12 last year for the Houston Texans. The team also drafted Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty in the fourth round of this year's draft.
