Toddler found unresponsive in a feces-filled home with 88 dead or dying animals
A 2-year-old-boy is in the hospital in critical condition after being found unconscious and bruised in a home. The home was filled with 88 dead and dying animals.
According to WSPA, the boy was found in Gray Court, South Carolina on Tuesday evening after the boy's mother, Savannah V. Morgan, said that he had choked. Later, Morgan changed her story and said that she dropped the child.
The 2-year-old suffered bleeding in the brain and retinal issues. Authorities suggest that his 25-year-old mother physically abused him. The boy was not alone when he was found inside the home. Two other children, a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old, were taken into DSS custody.
Lt. Scott Franklin told WSPA that dozens of dead animals were found alongside the children. Animal Control officers found 48 dead rats and 10 dead python snakes in the home. There were also three dogs, six dead tarantulas, four bearded dragons (two dead), two turtles, and 11 dead gerbils. Of all the animals found in the home, 80 percent of them were dead.
The animals were reportedly found in plastic bins and other cages. Two dogs were chained behind the home and their rib cages were showing due to their lack of food. In addition, animal feces was found all over the home.
Morgan has been charged with three counts of child neglect in addition to one count of child abuse and cruelty to animals.
