Updated

A gunman opened fire on Thursday at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, and authorities were responding to reports of multiple injuries, the Advertiser newspaper in Lafayette reported.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the shooting, which the Advertiser reported broke out during a showing of the film "Train Wreck" at the Grand Theatre.

"Prayers for Lafayette at Grand Theater. Talking to state police colonel about shooting in Lafayette," Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said in a tweet.

Lafayette is a city of some 120,000 people located roughly 55 miles (90 km) southwest of Baton Rouge.
