Nikki Reed just became a Mrs. after marrying Ian Somerhalder in April, but the 27-year-old star is about to take on an even bigger role as she steps into the shoes of patriotic icon, Betsy Ross.

The actress recently announced she'd be playing the fearless American hero on the third season of Fox's "Sleepy Hollow."

"I've been waiting my whole life to play Betsy Ross," Reed told AOL in an exclusive interview. "I love this woman and I love this character."

Reed remained mum on what viewers can expect to see, but she did reveal Betsy is unlike any character she's played before.

"Obviously she's an iconic character, but they definitely got their own spin on her," she dished.

Though the hit show's enthralling storylines may have attracted the brunette beauty, its recent relocation may have swayed her decision to take the role. "Sleepy Hollow" is moving production to Atlanta – the same city where Somerhalder's "Vampire Diaries" is coincidentally filmed.

Reed reportedly put her Hollywood Hills pad on the market earlier this month for $1.3 million leading many to believe that the pair would take up a permanent residence in Atlanta, but Reed played coy on the subject. "My home is my home," she said.

It sounds like it would be hard for the former "Twilight" star to uproot herself from California anyways – a state she's called home her entire life.

"I grew up in Venice about a block off the boardwalk. My family is really outdoorsy so I was probably swimming before I could walk," Reed said during a beach cleanup event sponsored by Barefoot Wine and the Surfrider Foundation.

"I think when you grow up in areas close to the beach you take responsibility for what you contribute. I want to believe that human beings want to have a purpose and want to do good."

Reed, who is currently working on a documentary about rhino poaching, revealed that her need to elevate important issues on social media is something she and her husband are both passionate about.

"He does so much in his own way – he has a foundation and he's very active in this world
– if anything, we just bounce ideas off each other and try to come together as a team."
