Viral Facebook photo helps to save boy's eyesight

(NESBIT, Ms.) — Two Mississippi families learned the power of social media after both their children were diagnosed with the same condition through Facebook.

News Channel Three first told you about a Nesbit, Mississippi girl who was diagnosed with Coats' Disease after her mother posted a picture of her on Facebook.

One of Tara Taylor's friends suggested she have her daughter's eye checked after she noticed a white or green glow in her eye.

Hours after the story was posted online it went viral.

Jennifer Colson said Rylee's picture popped up on her Facebook page and it took her breath away.

The Jackson, Mississippi mom said she had seen the same thing in her four-year-old son's eye before.

Jennifer's husband saw the very same thing.

"I was like he may need to go have that looked at," said Dee Colson.

Carter was also diagnosed with Coats' disease and is seeing the same specialist who treated Rylee at the Baptist Eye Clinic.

"We did multiple treatments. I believe it was five times over the course of year and he's done great," said Dr. Jorge Calzada.

The family was told Carter's left eye will never be perfect, but his father said his vision has improved dramatically.

He was just grateful Rylee and her family decided to share their story.

"We owe everything to them and the article," said Colson.

Rylee lost most of the vision in her left eye, but that hasn't stopped her from doing things like gymnastics.

Doctors said a glow in the eye can also signal other things like cancer.
