An enormous manhunt for escaped drug lord Joaquin Guzman is underway, and Mexico is offering a 3.4 million dollar reward for his capture.

The cartel kingpin broke out of a high security prison located west of Mexico City on Saturday night.

Despite being under the watch of surveillance cameras and outfitted with a monitoring device, he disappeared from his cell undetected.

It's believed he slipped through a hole in his cell's shower, and then trekked through a roughly mile long tunnel.

The underground passageway, which is sizable, ventilated, and equipped with lights, had been dug beneath some maize fields near the prison.

At its exit point, investigators found a cabin containing beds. It's presumed those who created the getaway route stayed there while working.

One official believes Guzman may be hiding out in Mexico City, waiting for search efforts to dwindle.

It's also believed that as soon as the cartel leader is able, he will move to the region along the Pacific Coast that serves as his home turf.

This is Guzman's second escape from prison, the first occurred in 2001.

In that instance, it took authorities 13 years to find him.FBI's Most Wanted FindTheBest
