4D materials are already here and this is what they look like
Forget 3D printing. 4D printing is the next thing.
We are all very familiar with three dimensional materials that nowadays we can print by ourselves with relatively cheap 3d printers, but the future has an extra dimension.
4D materials are actually 3d materials that change and adapt with time, taking a different shape and purpose than the original outcome.
How is that helpful?
Imagine you receive a box that turns itself into a table with chairs instead of having to assemble it yourself. It's a proper non living object that can change through time but without any microprocessor or circuit, though it is programmable.
