BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Police say they are checking on a report of a single shot fired at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside Washington.

Montgomery County police spokeswoman Natasha Plotnikov says a 911 caller reported hearing one shot inside Building 1, the original hospital on the campus in Bethesda, before 11 a.m. Monday. She says police have not confirmed the report of a shot.

The Navy's website warns that the campus is on lockdown and all personnel are sheltering in place after a report of an active shooter. Department of Defense and National Institutes of Health security are searching with county officers.

Local television coverage shows police cars parked by the building and people walking away from it. Roads in the area are closed, and helicopters are circling above.
