Newest Diet Craze Blends Paleo and Vegan Eating

NEW YORK — Beyonce, Carrie Underwood, Shania Twain and Demi Moore all say a vegan diet is the way they stay looking fresh and healthy. Others swear by juicing. Or paleo.

Now, the latest diet craze comes in the form of a hybrid: pegan — a low-carb paleo diet plus the fruits and vegetables of a vegan diet.

Tasto Sinclair, a father of two, knew at age 32 that he was in trouble. He also knew that he was a "huge bread eater." He was facing abdominal bloating and intestinal issues, and headed for gastroenterologist Dr. Prem Chattoo, who found the source of his problem.

"Stomach pains, acid reflux, irritable bowel — 60 to 75 percent of those problems are correlated to what we eat," Chattoo said.

Chattoo urges his patients to go pegan, eating veggies and smart carbs are 75 percent of the plan. Lean meat makes up 25 percent of your plate.

"I am a firm believer of glycemic control. Processed sugars cause the pancreas to secrete insulin. Insulin causes the body to retain fat," Chattoo said.

While paleo and it's ultra low carb approach can rip your body, from this doctor's view there's a price to be paid.

"The biggest downside to paleo healthwise and it can cause colorectal cancer, increased cholesterol, increased heart disease," Chattoo said.

But on the Pegan diet, Sinclair's symptoms disappeared and he said he's feeling better than ever.
