Shocking picture shows a 35-year-old man marrying a 6-year-old girl

On Tuesday, Metro released pictures that feature a 35-year-old councillor Ratan Lal Jat marrying a 6-year-old girl in Rajasthan, West India.

The wedding is thought to have taken place on June 23 in a secret village temple ceremony. There were 5 witnesses to the event.

Among the witnesses was Jumani Bai, local marriage broker known for arranging marriages with child-brides for fees.

The disturbing ceremony took place so that Ratan Lal Jat could fulfill the requirements of Nata Pratha, an ancient local custom that deems married men eligible of extramarital affairs with married women so long as the men provide financial compensation.

Ratan Lal Jat paid the girl's family an undisclosed fee for the marriage and is allowing the child-bride to continue to live with her family in their home.

As pictures of the wedding circulated social media after the fact, police caught wind of the illegal incident.

Upon learning about the wedding, police arrested Ratan Lal Jat under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act of 2006. Inspector and Station House officer of Gangrar, Gyanedra Singh, said to Metro:

"We learnt about the incident when the pictures of the wedding started circulating on social network apps. We managed to get hold of the pictures and we sent a team to investigate the matter. We found Ratan Lal had married a minor to follow age-old customs. But for us it is a clear case of child marriage and we arrested Ratan Lal Jat under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006."

An investigation has been launched to find all witnesses involved in the illegal child marriage.
