Bomb Squad Demonstrates the Dangers of Fireworks

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) -- The Southwest Enforcement Bureau Bomb Squad gave Fox 8 an exclusive fireworks demonstration.

Bomb squad officers explained the smallest details can make a huge difference when you start blasting fireworks.

"Even the smallest firework can be destructive," bomb squad member Dave Kammerman said.

Several different fireworks can be purchased in Ohio, but it's illegal to set off most of them in the state.

"People should not be setting these off in their yards," bomb squad commander Franco Lanza said.

Lanza stressed it is best to not purchase any fireworks and instead go to a public display and watch.

"It's best to let the professionals handle it, it's just too dangerous," bomb squad member Bruce Merwin said.

Many communities , such as Parma, will increase patrols this weekend to deal with any fireworks complaints.

"Most people think they are just fireworks," Lanza said. "Fireworks have explosives in them, depending on how much they have, they can cause injury and death."
