Insensitive tourists take selfies at Tunisia massacre site

Updated

Now that Disney has banned selfie sticks from its parks, it seems tourists are taking the millennial devices to an even less appropriate attraction. Tourists in Tunisia have been spotted taking selfies at the beach where an ISIS gunman killed 38 people on Friday.

People are going to the scene of the crime with friends and family to smile (!) for the camera. Haven't they ever heard the phrase "too soon?" Apparently selfies trump sensitivity.

Twitter fiends are bashing the tourists for their thoughtless actions. One user wrote:

%shareLinks-quote="Crass and thoughtless of those grinning idiots taking selfies on beach in Tunisia where so many people lost their lives" type="quote" author="Twitter user" authordesc="" isquoteoftheday=""%

Others are sounding off against the selfie-obsessed tourists by saying that they should be ashamed of themselves.

Amran Hussain, a 29-year-old Army reservist who stood for Labour in North East Hampshire in the recent election, was among the tourists seen taking a picture with a selfie stick. Hussain defended his actions by saying:

"On Saturday morning we went to show our respects to all the innocent people who lost their lives. My friends and I walked silently from our hotel to the site with a bouquet of flowers, where together we laid them down with others' tributes, then held hands and took a moment to pray for all those who fell victim to the terrorist attack, their loves ones, and all those who may be affected. We also prayed for all the locals and their families who will likely be badly affected by the lack of tourism for the foreseeable future, we wished them all the best."

He then went on to say:

%shareLinks-quote="We took a few pictures to share with the world to show that we care about and love the country and its people, and that we did go out to the site to show solidarity and support, and in defiance to the terrorists. " type="quote" author="Amran Hussain" authordesc="" isquoteoftheday="false"%

Thus, selfie-takers are using the defense that the pictures were taken in a show of solidarity as well as defiance to the terrorists.
